We Love Calling Kohala, HI Home
Named after the nearby volcanic Kohala Mountain, the oldest volcano in Hawaii, Kohala is best known for the gorgeous coastal views, beaches, sprawling ranches, and historic sites. Low annual rainfall makes this corner of the Big Island quite popular for resorts and golf courses. One of the best views and beach experiences you can get in Kohala is on Hapuna Beach - this designated state recreational area boasts a half-mile stretch of golden sand and crystal-clear blue waters. It’s popular among locals and tourists alike for the spectacular views and ranks at the top of the Big Island’s favored beaches. With plenty of pavilions for a picnic, this is the absolute perfect spot to stop and enjoy a day with the whole family.
For a profound and beautiful experience, we love visiting the Pu'ukohola Heiau National Historic Site. This historic site is a symbol of unification and peace for native Hawaiians. You can view an ancient temple submerged in the water and learn about the history of the Hawaiian kingdom. If you want a real adventure, consider hiking along paved walking trails, where you can even hike south from the park along the Ala Kahakai National Historic Trail, or even to Mau'umae Beach, about 3/4 mile from the park. One of the most breathtaking activities to partake in at Pu'ukohola Heiau National Historic Site is the shark, whale, and dolphin watching. Humpback whale sightings are extremely common during the winter months.
